This week, the following posts were added to the learn.archoncad.com web site.

BIM_SIG_014 Special Interest Group November 2012
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/11/10355/bim_sig_014-special-interest-group-november-2012/

The Vectorworks stair tool was introduced for Vectorworks 2011, but this still
seems to be some confusion about how to use the stair effectively. At first
look, the stair looks powerful but complicated. It's important to understand the
concept behind the stair so that you can use the stair quickly and easily. If
you work with the concept of the stair, it works really well, but if you try to
work against the concept of the stair you will have trouble.

BIM_SIG_013 Special Interest Group November 2012
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/11/10350/bim_sig_013-special-interest-group-november-2012/

When stories were introduced with Vectorworks 2012 there was a lot of discussion
about how to use stories and whether you could use stories in a flexible way to
create the type of buildings you wanted. There was also a lot of discussion
about how to create split-level houses using stories. The common answer is that
you can't use stories to create a split level house, but this is wrong. You can
use stories to create a split level house and in this special interest group we
looked at that particular issue.

[The iPad Tutor] Weekly Digest 03

This week, the following posts were added to theipadtutor web site:

0055 Answer a Phone Call with a Message

With iOS 6, Apple introduced a new technique when you're answering your phone.
Instead of just answering or turning your phone off is now a new option.

0054 Google Earth

Google Earth is a great way of viewing maps online. Really there more than just
maps, many of the American cities now have 3-D buildings and terrain. This
allows you to really feel what it's like to be in a place.

0053 Google Drive

Google Drive is an online storage facility giving you free 5 GB of online
storage. Along with the storage there is also an application for your web
browser and for your mobile devices.

0052 Safari - Find on Page

In my movie about Google Chrome I showed how to search for information on a
particular page, without searching the entire Internet. This facility is also
available on Safari.

0051 Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a direct competitor to Safari, the web browser on your iPhone
and iPad. Once you have downloaded the Google Chrome application you can access
Google Chrome from the main Google app (the Google search app).

0050 Google Search

Google has made several applications for the iPad or iPhone. The applications
can be downloaded from the App Store. All you need to do is to search for Google
and you will see all the applications. All these Google applications are free.

[Archoncad] Weekly Digest 5 (blogs and movies for Vectorworks)

This week, the following posts were added to the learn.archoncad.com web site.

Referencing (Workgroup Reference) - Part 3

Referencing a Design Layer From a Separate File - Using a layer import for
Workgroup Referencing keeps your work in line with the referenced file. This
method is better when you have to send your work to a consultant.

Referencing (Workgroup Reference) - Part 2

Referencing for Design Layer Viewports - You can reference a file using a
Design Layer Viewport. This allows you to move or rotate the reference.

Referencing (Workgroup Reference) - Part 1

Referencing Images - When you import an image file you can reference the image.
If the original image gets updated, you can easily update the image in your
drawing.

Viewports - Part 8

Viewport Class Overrides - You can edit the graphic style of a classes in a
veiwport to change the graphic quality of the drawing.

Viewports - Part 7

Change Viewport Scale - You can easily can easily change the scale of a sheet
layer viewport.

Viewports - Part 6

Copy and Rename Viewports - An easy way to make a viewport is often to copy an
existing veiwport and rename and edit it.

Viewports - Part 5

Viewport Cache - For adding information to elevations, make sure you turn on
the viewport cache.

Viewports - Part 4

Edit Viewport Crop - If you get the crop wrong in a viewport, edit it.

Viewports - Part 3

Right Mouse Click to Edit Viewport - This is such a quick way to edit the
viewports, you have to use it.

Viewports - Part 2

Design Layer Viewports - Design layer viewports replace layer links, they allow
you to link information from one or more layers (even from another file) to the
destination layer.

Viewports - Part 1

Creating Sheet Layer Viewports - You should be using sheet layer viewports to
create drawings, they are the fastest, most powerful way.

Customising Vectorworks - Part 2

Workspaces - Tool Palettes - You can change the tools you have on the palettes.
Get rid of the tools you do not use, make the tools you do use easier to get to.
Add hot keys for fast access to tools.

Customising Vectorworks - Part 1

Workspaces - Menus - You can change the way Vectorworks appears. Get rid of the
commands you do not use, make the commands you do use easier to get to. Add
keyboard shortcuts.

Building a Symbol Library - Part 3

Building a Symbol Library - Collect all your symbols together in a library, but
don’t forget to give is a structure to make it easy to use.

Building a Symbol Library - Part 2

Editing a Symbol - Once symbols are created, they can be edited.

Building a Symbol Library - Part 1

Creating a Symbol - Create symbols for objects you use on a regular basis.

podcast142 Editing Property Line Text Size

If you have a property line, you can change the font size, the font type, and so
on by using the text menu. But it's quicker to use a text style. With a properly
constructed text style, you can drag-and-drop the text style onto your property
line to create consistent text with the other parts of your drawing.

cadmovie876 - Stairs - Part 8

Circular Stairs -  The Stair tool also has the ability to make circular
stairs.

cadmovie875 - Stairs - Part 7

Stair Tool - U-Stair (Dog-leg Stair) - the Stair tool can make U-Stairs ( dogleg
stairs) with the landing or with winders, depending on the options you choose in
the configuration.

cadmovie874 - Stairs - Part 6

Stair Tool - Stair with Landing - The previous movie used a simple type of stair
to demonstrate the stair tool. But the stair tool can make more complex  stairs
including stairs with landings.

cadmovie873 - Stairs - Part 5

Stair Tool - Straight Stair - The stair tool has a completely different way of
working from the custom stair tool. This can cause some confusion if people try
to use their working methods from the custom stair on this tool.

cadmovie872 - Stairs - Part 4

Custom Stair - Other Stair Options -The custom stair is a flexible stair, and
you can make very complex stair with it. To use the stair effectively, you need
to understand the basic concept behind the stair.

cadmovie870 - Stairs - Part 2

Circular Stair - There is a very simple circular stair which uses the same
concept as the simple stair above. Unfortunately you will have to add this stair
to your workspace.

cadmovie869 - Stairs - Part 1

Simple Stair - The Simple Stair tool can be used to create your stairs at
concept stage. This tool is only available on the Landmark and Fundamentals
workspaces. But if you want a fast simple stair, then this is the tool to use.

cadmovie871 - Stairs - Part 3

Custom Stair - Straight Stair - The Custom Stair tool is designed to allow you
to create a range of complex stairs. You can create stairs with several landings,
circular stairs, stairs with landings at any angle, and you have more control
over the landings. If you have Vectorworks 2009, the custom stair is called the
Stair Tool. The Custom Stair is not avaialble if you have Vectorworks
Fundamentals.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 8

Using Pillars to Join Tricky Walls - Use Pillars to join several walls together
when the wall join won’t work.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 7

Pillars - Use Pillars to help draw plans where walls find it hard, where walls
are tapered in plan, where there are old fireplaces and so on.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 6

Slab Style Library - The slab styles are stored in the same library as the wall
styles.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 5

Slab Styles - The slab works like a horizontal wall, and you can create slab
styles that make it easy to create complex slabs. Slab styles work with wall
styles.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 4

Editing Slabs - A Slab can be edited to create holes, set-downs, or voids under
the slab.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 3

Slab Tool - The Slab tool is used to create more complex slab objects. Slabs
can auto-bound to walls, which makes it very quick to use.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 2

Editing Floors - Use floors for the floor of a building, for flat roofs, or for
any slab type object.

Floors, Slabs, Columns and Pillars - Part 1

Floors - Use floors for the floor of a building, for flat roofs, or for any
slab type object.

Viewing - Part 4

Saved Views - A saved view makes it quick to return to a view. Use saved views
for perspectives, blow-ups of the plan and rotated views.

Viewing - Part 3

Rotated Plan View - This is a really useful technique for rotating your view,
without actually rotating the information on the drawing.

Viewing - Part 2

Snap Loupe - Using the Snap Loupe makes it easy to zoom in temporarily.

Viewing - Part 1

Zooming - You can zoom into a drawing use a few different ways.

SST_1211 - Stairs

I've spoken to several users that seem to struggle with the stair tools. There
there's more than one stair tool that you can use in Vectorworks. On the
Fundamentals and Landmark workspace there is a very useful stair called the
Simple Stair,  then there is the Custom Stair, and finally on the Architect
workspace is the stair tool. The Stair tool is a very powerful but complex tool
for creating extremely accurate stairs.

[Archoncad] Weekly Digest 3 (blogs and movies for Vectorworks)

This week, the following posts were added to the learn.archoncad.com web site.
What’s New with Vectorworks 2013 - Novedge Webinar
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9717/whats-new-with-vectorworks-2013-novedge-webinar/

There are a lot of new things in Vectorworks 2013. Some of these are fixes or
enhancements to the current Vectorworks, and some of them are brand new. The new
features are going to make working in Vectorworks 2013 substantially faster by
improving your workflow.

Online Workshops For November Available for Bookings
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9709/online-workshops-for-november-available-for-bookings/

The November online workshops will be looking at the different stair tools.
Which one should you use, when do they work best, and what do you do when none
of them work for you?

SST_1210 - What's New in Vectorworks 2013
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/8874/sst_1210-whats-new-in-vectorworks-2013/

There are a lot of new things in Vectorworks 2013. Some of these are fixes or
enhancements to the current Vectorworks, and some of them are brand new. The new
features are going to make working in Vectorworks 2013 substantially faster by
improving your workflow.

Quick Preferences
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9635/quick-preferences/

In later versions of Vectorworks you can access quick preferences from the
toolbar. In Vectorworks 2013 they have increased the number of preferences that
you can access from this area. But that is not the only way that you can create
quick preferences. Prior to this, you would create quick preferences by writing
a small script which would sit in a floating palette.

Kitchen Symbols
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9627/fisher-and-paykel-symbols/

Vectorworks comes with several libraries full of furniture and electrical
appliances. But sometimes you want to have something which is more specific to
the country you are from. I have created some symbols that match the F&P objects
like dishwashers, stoves, ovens, and range hoods.

epodcast165 - Creating a Non-Standard Door
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9624/epodcast165-creating-a-non-standard-door/

If you use the standard door object in Vectorworks, it allows you to create a
non-standard door. However, there are a few steps you need to go through in
order to make this happen. In this example I show 3D model of a door with a
chamfer cut off the corner. But you could also use the same technique to create
doors that Vectorworks does not support, for example bi-folding doors with five
leaves.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 20
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9610/dealing-with-roofs-part-20/

2 Storey Roof - Fixing Roof issues - If you make a roof that has design issues,
this can be the solution.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 19
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9609/dealing-with-roofs-part-19/

2 Storey Roof - Roof for Upper Floor - This is how to make the upper part of a
two storey roof, and how you see them together.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 18
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9591/dealing-with-roofs-part-18/

2 Storey Roof - Roof for Lower Floor - There are times when you want to make a
2 storey roof. This Is how you start the lower roof.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 17
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9590/dealing-with-roofs-part-17/

Creating a Complex Roof Using a Standard Roof - I often find the standard
Vectorworks roof will not make the roof I want. If you work on renovation
projects you will find the standard Vectorworks roof will not be able to draw
the final roof you want, and sometimes find the standard roof will not draw the
existing roof because people have added and extended the building over the
years.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 16
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9589/dealing-with-roofs-part-16/

Flat Roofs - First, is the roof really flat. Even membrane roofs have a low
pitch on them and as you want to use this 3D model to create accurate sections
you may as well build the roof correctly, with a low pitch.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 15
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9588/dealing-with-roofs-part-15/

Curved Roofs - VectorWorks doesn’t really have a tool that will make a curved
roof, but we can draw a form that looks like a curved roof.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 14
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9587/dealing-with-roofs-part-14/

Cut Out in a Roof Face - The other way to create the cut out in the roof face
is when you have already created the roof and then you want to punch a hole in
it. This technique is exactly the same as creating the cut out in a standard
VectorWorks roof.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 13
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9586/dealing-with-roofs-part-13/

Creating a Roof Face - Peak Height Above Axis - This option is under used but
very useful when you know the height to the ridge (peak) above the axis (pitch
line), but you do not know the angle of the roof.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 12
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9585/dealing-with-roofs-part-12/

Creating a Roof Face by Rise Over Run - Creating a roof by rise over run is
similar to the create roof by angle, but you use a horizontal length for the run
and a rise for the run.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 11
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9584/dealing-with-roofs-part-11/

Creating Roof Face by Angle - A roof face is one part of the roof, what you
might call a roof plane. A roof face is a hybrid object. Vectorworks takes a 2D
roof plane and projects it to 3D. This method creates a roof face by the roof
angle.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 10
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9573/dealing-with-roofs-part-10/

When You Can’t Edit The Roof Enough - There are times when the editing that
you can do to the roof is not enough.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 9
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9572/dealing-with-roofs-part-9/

Roof Accessories - You can add soffits and fascias to a roof.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 8
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9571/dealing-with-roofs-part-8/

Cut Out in a Standard Roof - If you don’t want to go to the trouble of
creating a 3D symbol for the skylight, you can punch a simple hole in the roof
face. VectorWorks calls these holes a cut out.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 7
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9570/dealing-with-roofs-part-7/

Inserting a Skylight - Putting in a skylight is similar to putting in a dormer
window. To place a skylight you need to create a skylight symbol. Then you will
notice that you get selection handles on each roof face and at the bottom centre
of each skylight.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 6
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9569/dealing-with-roofs-part-6/

Inserting a Dormer Window - To insert a dormer window you need to create the
roof first and you need a window or door symbol to insert. You cannot use a
plug-in object like a simple window to create a dormer.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 5
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9561/dealing-with-roofs-part-5/

Mono Pitch Roof - A mono pitch roof is popular at the moment. Surprisingly, you
can keep the roof as a standard VectorWorks roof.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 4
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9560/dealing-with-roofs-part-4/

One Gable - You can edit a roof, even a complex roof so it has one gable.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 3
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9559/dealing-with-roofs-part-3/

Split Gable - You can create a split gable roof using the standard roof
command, and some simple editing.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 2
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9558/dealing-with-roofs-part-2/

Gable Roof - Once a roof is created you can edit parameters of the roof, roof
plane by roof plane if you want, or the entire roof.

Dealing with Roofs - Part 1
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9557/dealing-with-roofs-part-1/

Creating Roofs - You can create a roof from selected walls, or you can draw a
polygon for your roof setting out.

epodcast164 - Assigning Textures to Texture Beds
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9554/epodcast164-assigning-textures-to-texture-beds/

I have had some questions about using texture beds on site models. There is a
movie called Site Modelling – Part 13 which shows you how to create a texture

Get a weekly email digest for what's new in Vectorworks

When you subscribe to this site, you can get a weekly digest of all the posts that have been added. The feedback from the subscribers is that this is very useful to help remind them of what's new, and to allow them to quickly look through the new posts for ones that are interesting.

Some weeks I've been adding more than 50 posts. Having the Digest allows you to quickly scroll through all the new posts.

He is an example from one of the recent emails. This is not a complete list, it's about half of it:

Applying Tiles - Use the Resource Browser or the Attributes Palette to apply
tiles.

Graphics - Part 13
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9154/graphics-part-13/

Tiles - A Tile is a repeatable graphic, like a hatch. But, it is much more
graphic than a hatch, and easier to edit.

Object Opacity - Object opacity is the ability to make an object transparent.
For an elevation like this we could draw shadows for the building and make them
transparent.

Attribute/Mapping tool. - This is the tool you use to change the position and
scaling of images and gradients.

Graphics - Part 10
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9151/graphics-part-10/

Creating Gradients - If you do not like the gradients that come with
Vectorworks, make your own, they are easy enough to make.

Graphics - Part 9
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9150/graphics-part-9/

Applying Gradients - Use the Resource Browser or the Attributes Palette to
apply gradients.

Graphics - Part 8
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9149/graphics-part-8/

Gradients - Gradients are a great way of adding  colour fill where you want
the colour to change from one colour to another (or several colours).

Graphics - Part 7
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9148/graphics-part-7/

Creating Images - You can use any image on your computer to create Vectorworks
images.

Graphics - Part 6
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9147/graphics-part-6/

Applying Images - The Resource Browser can be used to apply images, and you can
use the Attributes Palette to apply images.

Graphics - Part 5
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9146/graphics-part-5/

Images - Images are a great way of applying a graphic image to your drawings.

Graphics - Part 4
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9119/graphics-part-4/

Creating Hatches - When you want a hatch that is not in the library, you need
to learn to create your own hatches.

Graphics - Part 3
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9118/graphics-part-3/

Applying Hatches - You can use the Resource Browser to find a hatch and then
either double click on the hatch in the Resource Browser or drag the hatch to
the object.

Graphics - Part 2
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9117/graphics-part-2/

Hatches - Hatches are a series of lines that represent a material. This could
be a series of lines that looks like brick, or tiles.

Graphics - Part 1
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9116/graphics-part-1/

Graphic Attributes - How to apply graphic attributes, such as line weight,
hatching, image fills and graphic symbols to a drawing.

Resource Browser - Part 6
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9115/resource-browser-part-6/

Finding Resources - You can look for resources in the current file, or anywhere
on your computer.

Resource Browser - Part 5
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9114/resource-browser-part-5/

Exporting Resources - You can export resources from the current file to a
library, or to another file.

Resource Browser - Part 4
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9113/resource-browser-part-4/

Creating a Symbol Folder - If you have a lot of symbols in the Resource
Browser, they are easier to find if you have folders for them.

Resource Browser - Part 3
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9112/resource-browser-part-3/

Changing the Viewing Options on the Resource Browser - You can change the way
resources are shown on the Resource Browser.

Resource Browser - Part 2
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9111/resource-browser-part-2/

Attaching a Library to the Browser - One of the useful features of the Resource
Browser is the ability to look into other files and use their resources.

Resource Browser - Part 1
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9110/resource-browser-part-1/

What is the Resource Browser? - The Resource Browser is used to browse for the
objects that VectorWorks calls resources so that you can use them in your
drawings. Resources can be hatches, gradients, images, textures, symbols,
Plug-In objects, wall styles, worksheets and so on.

Object Info Palette - Part 2
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9109/object-info-palette-part-2/

Data - The Data Pane allows you to attach database information to an object and
edit that information.

Object Info Palette - Part 1

http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9095/snapping-palette-part-9/

Constrain Tangent - The is really useful for making sure that you are drawing
tangent to an arc or circle. When you need it, there is no substitute for this.
There are not options, the constraint is either turned on or off.

Snapping Palette - Part 8
http://learn.archoncad.com/2012/10/9094/snapping-palette-part-8/

Smart Edge - When you need to be parallel to objects, or offset from a line or
polygon, this is the constraint to use.
